As a musician, I have learned that there is no age limit when it comes to pursuing your dreams. As long as we’re alive and with our dreams up, there’s no little or higher age that will stop us. We are what we believe, and the music itself speaks more than what our birth certificate says. Music is young and always will be, and the age timing machine does not apply to our dreams and music.
We have seen many great artists, such as Mick Jagger and Madonna (among others), who are way more energetic than a lot of young musicians. Seeing them on stage is so inspiring and a lesson to anyone. Music is so powerful that somehow it brings youth, and it’s a super powerful fountain of youth that will stick with us and contaminate the rest of the world with these great examples that no matter how old you are, there’s nothing that you couldn’t do if you’re still alive.
My point is, whether you’re starting with music when you’re young, later in life, or have been around in the music for a long, long time, there’s nothing that will stop you while you’re in this world. In this world, the only one that can stop you from being an active musician is you.
Never is too late to start pursuing your dreams. The world has changed dramatically, and things that were considered one thing in the past are now totally different. Age is just a number, and it shouldn’t define who you are or what you can achieve.
Live each day like it is your last day so that you can give all you have for every day. Every day is a new-born (reset) for us, and we should take advantage of that. We all have the power to change our lives and make a difference, no matter what our age is.
Here are some inspiring stories of people from all backgrounds who have pursued their dreams, despite their age:
- Susan Boyle – Boyle was 47 years old when she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. Her stunning rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables catapulted her to fame and she has since released multiple successful albums.
- Charles Bradley – Bradley was 62 years old when his debut album, “No Time for Dreaming,” was released in 2011. He had spent most of his life working odd jobs and performing as a James Brown impersonator before finally getting his big break.
- Sharon Jones – Jones was in her 40s when she began performing with the Dap-Kings, and her first album with the band wasn’t released until she was 46. Despite facing rejection from record labels early in her career, Jones went on to become a beloved soul singer and performer.
- Seasick Steve – Steve Wold, better known as Seasick Steve, didn’t release his first album until he was in his 60s. Despite being a talented musician and performer for decades, it wasn’t until he was “discovered” by BBC DJ John Peel that his career really took off.
- Leonard Cohen – Cohen was already a successful poet and novelist by the time he released his first album at the age of 33. However, it wasn’t until he was in his 50s and 60s that he really hit his stride as a musician, with albums like “I’m Your Man” and “The Future.”
- Vera Wang, a fashion designer, started her career in fashion when she was 40 years old.
- Grandma Moses, an American folk artist, didn’t start painting until she was in her 70s.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder, the author of the Little House on the Prairie series, didn’t start writing until she was in her 40s.
- Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s founding fathers, invented bifocals, the lightning rod, and the Franklin stove all in his 70s.
These are just a few examples of people who didn’t let age define them and went on to achieve great things. It’s never too late to pursue your dreams and make a difference in the world.
So, if you’re a musician or someone who has a dream to pursue, don’t let age hold you back. Remember, age is just a number, and you have the power to make a difference. Live each day to the fullest, pursue your passions, and don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. The world is waiting for you to make your mark, no matter what your age is.
